Owing to theMiddleEast's aridity and pervasive dependence on the fossil fuel industry, it is one of the most vulnerable regions to climatechange and water scarcity. Much of theMiddleEast already swelters through what are some of the hottest summers on the planet, but, occasionally, a combination of sky-high temperatures and incredible humidity can take conditions to almost unreal levels. As climatechange reduces rainfall across theMiddleEast, communities are increasingly turning to groundwater for agricultural irrigation. Combined with the region’sfragile soil structure, this is leading to the formation of massive sinkholes. The majority of respondents in theMiddleEast indicated that climatechange would have a great deal of impact on their lives, including more than half of respondents in Egypt (58 per cent) and the UAE (56 per cent).
